3D Printed Foot Orthotics

It’s been a long time in the making. Ever since Christian Johannsen, C.Ped. read an article in 2010 about a Scottish university experimenting with 3D printed foot orthotics and the favourable results they offered to the end user, he set out to find a way to bring this technology to his Foot Solutions stores. Christian and Charles, the COO of Foot Solutions, spent several weekends talking to the representatives of a number of companies representing hobbyist 3D printers, but found the technology too rudimentary for large scale production.

It wasn’t until the summer of 2014 when a group of young entrepreneurs approached them about their 3D printed foot orthotics that they saw an opportunity to make their dream a reality. With the help of Wiivv Wearables and its tech savvy team, as well as the high end 3D scanning technology from Foot Solutions, Charles and Christian were able to design the perfect foot orthotic. It took almost half a year to get it right, but the effort was worth the time, as the feedback from customers has been phenomenal.

Benefits of Custom 3D Printed Foot Orthotics:

  • Duplication: Love your first pair, print another pair exactly the same.
  • Fit: Since the orthotic is molded to a three dimensional model of the foot, errors in the production process are virtually eliminated, resulting in a better fit right from the get-go.
  • Hole in the Heel Design: Reduces thickness of orthotic device, preventing the heel from being lifted out of the back of the shoe.
  • Go Topless: 3D printed orthotics are designed with very thin edges, allowing the end user to wear the device directly against the skin without a top cover.
